Genre is a term used to categorise any form of art or entertainment for example films may be categorised into horror, romantic comedy. An individual who is about to watch a horror film, the individuals expectation of the film is to see scenes which may scare them. Also the genre of a film helps the audience to get a basic idea of what they are about to watch.
What is a thriller?
Thriller films usually have things like scary chase scene, action packed and builds up tension. Thrillers usually make the audience feel in a certain way for example, you would usually stay up all night because of the fear or raising pulse from the high pitched sounds that are used.
Examples of thrillers include;
- Inception - 2010
- Good Fellas - 1990
- Rear Window - 1954
Codes and conventions are regularly used features like lighting and sound which are typically used in thriller films to appeal to the audience.
The target audience is the group of people in which the film is aimed at. Thinking about the target audience is significantly important as thrillers are for 18+ and the reason for this is that theses films show violence which may not be suitable for the younger ages. A motion picture rating system is designed to specify the suitability to its audience, this includes things such as violence, substance abuse and other types of mature content.
Theme is the storyline, subjects are present in the film.
Sub-genres can be taking groups like comedies, mysteries, poems and making the thinking narrower. It is the stem of classical genres.
Audience response to thrillers
When people watch thrillers they usually find the storyline interesting and leaving them wanting to watch again to go through the action again. Thrillers leave you wondering what would happen next.
Conclusion
The introduction that I have created allowed me to gain a better understaning of what thrillers are and also the introduction allowed me to have a better understanding of what to expect when creating my portfilo for AS Media Studies. I have learnt some basic terms and now understand what they actually mean and how these key points would help me when i create my own thriller production.
I think that the most important part of Media Studies is to keep course work up to date. I believe that if I'm up to date with deadline I can achieve all of the course work requirements set.
